Our Entebbe day trip combines two main experiences: searching for Africa’s most mysterious bird the Shoebill in Mabamba Wetlands, and close encounters with adorable chimpanzees at Pelican Lodge. This journey takes you away from city noise into tranquil lakes and wetland environments, enjoying nature’s serenity and wildlife charm.
Search for Africa’s Most Mysterious Bird
Mabamba Wetlands is one of the best places to observe the rare Shoebill. The Shoebill is an ancient and unique large wading bird, named for its massive shoe-shaped bill. This bird is hailed as “Africa’s most wanted bird” and is one of birders’ ultimate targets.
The experience begins with a canoe journey from Entebbe through papyrus swamps. Led by experienced local bird guides, you’ll search for this impressive bird through quiet waterways. Shoebill sighting success rate is approximately 80%, with best viewing in early morning or late evening. Besides Shoebills, you may see many other wetland birds including African Fish Eagles, Hamerkops, various herons, and kingfishers.
The entire experience takes approximately 3-4 hours, including round-trip transport and time in the swamps. The canoe trip lasts about 2 hours, gliding quietly through papyrus-lined waterways, experiencing pristine wetland tranquility. A true wilderness experience and photographer’s paradise.
Close Encounters with Adorable Chimpanzees
Pelican Lodge, located on Entebbe’s lakeside, is a beautiful resort that also serves as a temporary home for chimpanzees rescued by the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (UWEC). The chimpanzees here are individuals unable to survive in the wild due to various reasons (such as parental loss, illegal pet trade rescue, etc.).
Accompanied by professional caregivers, visitors can closely observe these intelligent primates. You’ll learn about chimpanzee behavior, social structure, and conservation status. If lucky, you may witness heartwarming scenes of chimpanzees playing, feeding, and grooming each other. These chimpanzees are habituated to human presence but maintain their wild nature.
